Sherrill and Beth, how can you two take something as blah as 's and turn it into a comedy routine?!

Writing is subjective in many aspects, but good grammar always rules out.

I'll tell you another reason for avoiding parentheses in fiction novels. Every time I see that done, I know it's the author doing it and it pulls me right out of the character's head and makes me want to smack the author. As for the names ending in s, it used to be a hard and fast rule, taught in school by terminally sexually frustrated nymphomaniac fifth grade teachers, that the possessive use always meant you had to drop the second s or you'd be condemned to hell. Nowadays though, it's getting pretty common to just use the 's and be done with it.

I have ALWAYS not used the extra 's' when a person's name ends in an 's'. I'm with Jenna... WTF?!?!?!? One of my stories has a character with a name ending in 's', and the editor didn't tack on an extra one when used possessively.

And don't even get me started on commas. I put them where they shouldn't be, leave them off where they should be... oy.

We're going to have to do another intervention, I can see it now.

You got it! Ain't never gonna happen again in one of my books.

I've seen it in print, Claus', so it must be accepted just not grammatically correct.

Well with Lucas my editor didn't tack on a second S so I figure...it was okay. It is a reminder to never name a character with an S at the end of their name.

Know exactly what you mean, Diva. I've had a tremendous amount of trouble with the extra "S", especially since the villian in Teddi Turns On is named Claus. In fact I wanted to change his name to avoid the problem. Couldn't think of something better.

So you're supposed to put an s after an s apostrophe? WTF!!

I've always done Claus' not Claus's. Mostly because in school my teacher would chop of the second s then deduct a point on my score.

God damn it. That witch brainwashed me.
